I have a watermelon that is about 60 days old and the tendril closest to the watermelon is dry and brown. For a normal watermelon, I would pick it and eat it. I would like to keep this watermelon growing but I am afraid it won’t keep growing. Will it continue to grow? Is this tendril telling me anything?

I don’t think so. I would continue to measure it an see how the growth is. They can grow for 90 plus days if healthy.

Death of the tendril means little in a Carolina Cross. Plant health & melon age are two determining factors. If you will take your melon to a competition leave it on the vine as long as possible. Even if growth has stopped at least the melon will not be losing weight if it is still on the vine. Only if the stem is dead should a melon be picked and placed in a cool place to await a contest.

Not true Dennis, the guys growing on scales have found that the plant takes away from the fruit. There gets to be a point where the gains are less than what the loses are.
