Can we obtain any insight from Tomatoes vs. Pumpkin splits.

My tomatoes split when they are in their prime and the weather is hot. I have lost pumpkins under the same circumstances. I would say the pumpkins didn't split they exploded.

My tomatoes only split when the soil moisture level is not really consistent. A dry (and hot) period with unfrequent watering followed by rainy weather leads to splits for me.
So, I tried to water my tomato plants three times per day and if I didn't have the time for that at least twice per day with decent success.
Now, I am using a timer for watering and it waters my plants four times per day for only a very short period each time. So far that worked out very well and I didn't have any more splits.
