On top of Brush Mountain, Pa.

Any of you guys going to try for a giant tomato this season? If so, what seeds are you going to try and why? What are you doing about a pruning and fertilizing plan? Any suggestions about what to read in preparation. Any other thoughts on special preparation for the event?

I'm trying a few plants sowed the seed the night before last.Supersteak F1,Giant Belgian,Pineapple and Pink German Johnson looking forward to playing about with these.

axc I wish you luck. I planted outside 8 week old plants in walls o waters about 2 weeks ago. the secret
of big tomatoes is big plants and delayed flowering.
The biggest tomatoes form at hieght of 24-36 in from ground level.

Matfox, are they in a green house too? Freezing? And when are the biggest tomatoes harvested off of these early plants? July? When would you plant for an October weighoff?

jab wall o waters and hoop house. jab the plants i am refering to are for a late aug and oct wiegh off
my secret is I learned how to control flowering and I know what the time from flower to fruit is for the varieties I am using . How i will be doing this will be revealed when
it suits me.

Shannon if you start them the last of April or the first of May you will get Oct. tomatoes. As far as the right size plant I would set fruit on I judge by segments. When you grow one main stalk only for competion tomatoes you will get your flowers in different segments up the stalk. I like to choose the 5th or 6th segment of flowers to grow my monster 'maters on. So keep a fruit on the 5th,6th,& 7th segment & cull down from there.....Paul

matfox, What would you say the average size of the fruit grown on your comp. plants? Also, what is you personal best and personal average?

Personal average... meaning the average of you largest fruit from say the last 5 years... something like that.

Trying to get a feel for what's possible..

Jab none of my tomato plant varieties have preformed on consistent basis.Do to weather and other factors.

I use Monster Variety from P&P seeds, and get 3 pounds or more tomatoes on plants that are not given much care or time. I dont even take the time to prune down to 1 or 2 fruit per plant. I have grown all the biggest varieties at one time or another, and my favorite is Monster.

Monster tomato seeds are not available in the United States except through P & P Seeds. They were developed in Canada and the seed company which handles them is in Canada and cannot ship seeds to the United States. If you want Monster seeds you can buy them from Ray Waterman or you may drive to Canada.

Our frost season is in September...so is it too late this year for me to start giants? Which seed company in Canada????
