Im growing some tomato plants sent to me from a buddy (Perry) , although I dont grow tomatos very much Im having a slight problem with the leaves, my plant is approx 5 inches tall. The lower leaves are starting to turn a slight purple and the newer leaves at the top are starting to get yellow spots in certain places on the green leaf. Not all leaves are like this, I thought it might me a iron problem maybe or maybe my potting soil is to cold? I have the plant sitting in the basment next to a window that is kinda cool.Think this is my problem?

Most of my heirloom tomatoes have purple-ish color on the bottom of the leaves, sounds like the plants might be out growing their pots and need some food, I started mine with a light seaweed, then I gave em 9-18-9 from agro-k, after a few days I gave em a very light foliar of liquid humic.....BAM, they are some of the nicest looking mater and pepper plants I have seen.
Keep em warm, very close to the light.

Tom, Ill give it a try,I'm growing heirlooms also.

The purplish color thats on the lower leaves isn't in the veins of the leaf and thats what it made it so weird, and thats what made it hard to find any problem pictures to compare what mine look like on any of the university web sites.
I gave my plant little seaweed yesterday, and I just gave em a drink of the 1-14-14, lets see what that will do. Your right, I do need to transplant them into a bigger pot.

Tom, did that make your yellowish in the leaves disappear completely also? On just a few of my green leaves there are these bright yellow, weird shaped patterns. The best way I can describe it is, the yellow color thats in the green part of the leaf looks like a dalmatians dogs spots. lol

I grow many different vegetables and annual flowers every year. I have noticed when I am keeping the house cool the leaves will have a purplish color. I believe certain nutrients become unavailable when soil temps are very cool (I am guessing between 50 and 60 degrees) I want to say it is phosphorous but it doesn't really matter anyways because I correct the problem by raising the greenhouse temperature. Or as spring progresses The stronger sun and warmer temps. fix the problem. As far as the yellowing is concerned I really have never seen that before.

My tomato's still dont look so good, they are getting more light yellow almost white.I set a plant outside 4 days ago(been in the mid 70,s during the day) thinking this might help it because it was defiantly root bound, but over the past 4 days being outside this plant is turning more yellow and the leaves are turning crisp and dying. Weird,maybe the cool temps at night are doing it.
