Was it just me { here in the NE } or did many of you experience diseased tomato plants last year? Most of the leaves on my plants turned yellow and spotty, from the bottom and eventually worked it's way up to the tops. Plenty of good fruit but very sad unhealthy sparse looking plants. I think it was a fungus caused by too much rain, but I'm not sure.

Always clean out last years crop from the garden, especially is it is infected. Rotate your crops. Use seed that is resistant to the most diseases. It is risky to use seed from tomatos from infected plants. Plants your rows so to allow for the best air flow from the direction of the prevailing summer/fall winds to keep things dry-regardless if it isn't the fashion statement of the neighborhood....just a couple things I've tried ,heard, read.

Mulch to prevent the soil from splashing up when it rains..this will cure a lot of your issues

Yes, I had the same problem last year. I think I will add more mulch this year & pray for less rain.

What do you use for mulch around the tomato plants?

I don't mulch around the plants but will now start doing that. Is peat moss a good mulch to use?

Red plastic mulch is great even increases the size and textureof the tomato. I use a 3x3 sheet and drip tape under it.

I think a lot of the splash from the rains began infecting all my plants. Must have been something in the soil I guess.

I would not use peat moss, or Grass clippings. Straw or plastic seems to be the best choice. We use to have some old horse hair carpets that worked wonders.
