I tried the upside down thing using one I made out of a 5 gallon bucket. Keeping them watered is difficult during the hot summer but that could be easily beaten using some sort of a drip system. Choosing the right variety for them is imperative. IMO, determinate varieties do best. I had my best results using the varieties Husky Red and Patio.
I wouldn't be afraid of trying Paragon, Marglode Improved and Rutgers in a hanger. I wouldn't use the store bought version either. I'd use a 5 gallon bucket or larger.

I've grown them hydroponically. You will want to add some calcium to prevent BER in peppers and tomatoes when growing them hydroponically. Again, choosing the right variety is helpful. Some tomatoes are bred and more well suited for being grown hydropinically and or in the greenhouse environment.
