New to giant mater growing here and am confused on how genetics relate. I have 4 plants going and will choose two for my garden and give away the others. All 4 plants are very healthy and quite thick stemmed. Two of the plants are certainly thicker and stronger than the other two, but they are not from the larger tomatoes. Do I go with thickest strongest plant or do i go with the producer of the heaviest tomato?

What are the genetics of your plants if you have any, and are they all started at the same time? Are they all the same variety?

If they are all the same variety and same age, go for the sturdy healthy ones.

If they are different ages and the older ones are larger, go with the older ones as you need big plants just like with pumpkins.

If they are different varieties; a beefsteak will outperform in poundage usually, so go with your beefsteaks.

If they are all a non beefsteak, go with the sturdiest plants.

Thx Deb. They are from a 3, 5 and 7 pounder and one from Totally Tomatoes.

Totally Tomatoes should be a good eater. I'd err on relocating that one if you're growing for greatness. There are several 3's going around, 5 something is probably a Timm which are good producers, and the 7, I'd say that's a Harp... I'd go with the 5 and 7 unless they're superwimps; my Harps were good at going sturdy (look at my diary pics) fairly readily. Duane Perry has some good ones too, so um, what are your plants? :)
