I have tried and all I got was 2" tall sticks. Do you have to use a grow light? Heating pad? I must be doing something wrong.

I start my tomatoes in a peat pot with wet potting soil/peat mix. (or peat pellets to plant quicker)
I just barely cover the seeds and I put 2-4 seeds in depending on the germination rate.
As soon as it is up; if it is too cold to plant outside you need to put it under a grow light. If you can plant outside plant up to the leaves.
My tomatoes are doing really good. I have been testing my tea on them. It made the stems thicker and the plants grow quicker.
Good luck 2" sticks can be planted.

Any time they get leggy transplant to a larger pot and bury them up to their arm pits. You may even pinch off some leaves any time it gets a little more stem in the soil. Some years I end up in the cold frame with milk shake cups holding the final step of getting them ready to go out.

They do not like to get pot bound. Repot any time they get leggy.

the nice thing about tomatoes is they make roots from the stems, abundantly, even from ones that lay on the ground after a windy knock-down!
