The book says plants should be 8-12 inchs tall when planting,can I plant Early??what will happen if I do there 2 true leafs only 3 inchs tall started may 30th!Any help we are having cool nites under 50??????should I wait 1 more week??

i just planted sum late starting big rainbow tomato seedling that are about 6 inches tall but real thick and bushy, ive got pineapple, striped german,hillbilly, rainbow, 1 big zak from janowiak,lol and a host of red beefsteak types growing,,,watermelons are going nuts, mp pumkins are kinna slow but good and my giant sunflowers are going crazy

Thinking too hard Handy. Some, like the Hunts direct seed early June and they did OK, nudge, nudge. I prefer to transplant plants 18-24 inches tall into raised beds after hardening. Did the same this year and they are thriving. Doesn't mean I'm right, there are different ways to accomplish the same goal.

I was thinking the taller plant,could get buried deeper,since toms will root up the stem,I didnt know how key that might be??Thanks for info Andy I will plant soon,HHG,

Six inches will survive. In an attempt to get more roots, some like bigger plants that they can plant deeper in the soil in an attempt to get more roots. You could start from seeds directly into the ground but that takes much longer and a lot of seeds are eaten by birds and animals and even some small plants are pulled up out of the ground by small plant predators not to mention cutworms. There are many ways to do it. Marv

If I plant smaller mine are 3-4 inchs now,I think I will plant shallow & bury stem deeper by adding more soil in a few weeks,would this be a good idea Marv??or bad will plant this weekend,will wait for response???Thanks DAH!
