I have been saving seeds for awhile using the time honored method of removing the seeds from the tomatoes and letting them ferment in jars for a few days and then running the smelly mess through a screen and washing them and then drying them etc. This year one of my seed batches started to sprout after 3 days of fermenting. I was complaining to a pumpkin growing friend who told me I should enter the modern world. He does the exact same thing that I do except instead of allowing the seeds to ferment he adds a tablespoon of Oxi Clean to his removed seeds along with a cup or two of water in a bowl, mixes it up and says in one hour he removes the seeds, now clean, and proceeds to let them dry etc. He says that he avoids the mess, doesn't have concerns about sprouting etc and ends up with perfectly good seeds. Anyone have much experience with using Oxi Clean in saving tomato seeds?

I have been using the Oxi Clean method for three years now and love it. I only wonder why I had not been doing it sooner. It allows you to quickly prepare your seeds for drying. I have not had a single problem using it and recommend it to all. Marv

Forgive my dumb question, but why can't the seeds just be taken out of the tomato and dried out? Why do they need to ferment or use the Oxi clean method?

You can and for years many people did but the seeds stick together and are messy and there is a coating on the outside of the tomato that delays germination.

Thanks Marv. hopefully the seeds from the giant Romas I grew this year will germ next year. I'll have to try the oxy method with a few green tomatoes I have left as a test.

Used OxyClean today to process 3 different varieties of tomatoes. It seems to work well. I found that I needed to let it set for about 1 hour.
