Well, in all my years of starting tomato seeds, I finially experienced damping off. Looks like someone pinched the stem at the soil line. What precautions can I take so it does not spread to my other plants? I am tossing out all the infected plants and starting new. The other starter plants look great.

It's not actual damping off disease that you have got, it's more of a stem rot at the base, usually caused by a nasty soil bug called (Pithium) and there are several types of it.

The best way to prevent this happening is to use (Coir Compost) which has the ability to allow more air into the mix and better drainage,

I peronaly have not had a case of pithium strike my seedlings for at least the last fifteen years or more.

use for both damping off and Pythium.

did you use a good sterile seed starting mix?

Yes, I did use a good soil less seed starting mix. I believe I overwatered, cold weather, and just bad luck. And I believe I did not clean my pot good enough. Needless to say, no giant maters here this year. Unless someone can send me some seeds???

Still lots of time to grow giant maters. We'll be starting our seeds next week. I'm sure someone close to you must have a few seeds for you. Good luck.

Croley - I've got plenty of extra seedlings of top genetic stock of several varieties. If you are anxious to get a plant or two in the ground soon, I'll be glad to work something out to ship a couple of 5-6" tall seedlings expedited.

Seems a reasonable strategy to have some early and some late ones - you never know what the weather will be like a few months down the road.
