With my pumpkin season coming to a abrupt end. " there,s always next year right" . I turn my attention to my other project Big Zac tomatoes. The plants are about 8' tall with 40-50 fruit all about baseball size. I,ve posted a picture to give you a idea........Paul

Well it,s like this the pumpkin was growing good between 15-20 lbs a day. Then for 4 days we had a heat index of 130-145 degrees , actual temp. 90-95, high humidity. The pumpkin kept growing through the heat. The day the heat broke we got a bad storm 3" of rain in 1 hour & very high wind. Everything got blown over but that didn,t worry me because I know it always comes back up. It did come back up & everything looked well, but 2 days later the pumpkin only gained 11 lbs , the next day 8 , then 5, then 3. you get the point, & since I can only have 1 plant " GAME OVER" . My brother is thinking of growing some seeds from my 353 lb squash next year " I think it,s a good seed " . So with the rest of the season I,m going to grow a 353 to see what kind of plant it could be ( vine size ,# of fruit on plant ,ect. ) Do not care about getting a large fruit just testing the seed. I,m going to post it in my diary . Humor me I can,t go the rest of the season doing nothing. Wish me luck.....Paul. ..P.S. the fruit I got off my plant goes 185 lbs. It is a cross between a mombert 934 & holland 945 I,ll pass out seeds if anyone wants some . I think it,s a good cross......Paul

Sorry to hear of the disaster Paul...I kinda looked to you as a comrad in the backyard vs 12 plants on a farm lopsided hobby we are involved in. Backyards, 1 small plant and a pollinator, is a tough situation where one bad break, mistake or bum seed and its over...Fear not, I'll be reading about the 353 with much interest.good luck....Glenn A

How 'bout trusting your brother & growing your own seeds this year to see what your seeds' potential is? Until frost or Halloween that is. I'd be interested.

Picked my first red Big Zac tomatoe this week 2 lb. 1 oz.
I didn't sucker the plants , just let the plants grow huge" I topped them off when they reached 8' high".
Found out there is a tomatoe festival down the road on Sept. 3rd they pay $100 a pound for the biggest tomatoe. If I had knew this I would have suckered the plants " Oh Well you know I will do this next year. I presently have about 40 tomatoes on my 3 plants that go over a pound, 8 over 2 lb. & about 3-4 that I know is over 3 pounds.
Now that I know about this festival they better be ready for the years to come.
Is anyone else growing these & how are they doing........Paul

Hey huff, how do they (the fruits) look? Are they uniform or weird lookin? I read in the catalog to get rid of off looking seedlings since these wouldn't be true. Did you go thru all this trouble?
I stopped growing the record-holder Delicious 2 years ago because my friends & neighbors were afraid of the ones I gave them...

Mark,
Fruit looks fine except for the bottom , a little misshapen. As far as off seedlings, I started 12 seeds, planted 3 and passed out 9 . All 12 plants are producing somewhat the same.
I am absolutely planting these things again next year........Paul
