I won seeds from this tomato plant in a raffle. It was marked Heirloom 4.80 Wright. I planted out 10 plants. Every plant has a mega-bloom coming with the first set of blooms.

Questions: Does anyone know the parentage of the 4.80 Wright? or anything else about it. Is it common to have Mega blooms (mostly 4's, as far as I can see), with the first set of blooms? Can a big tomato grow from a plant currently at ~ 12" off the ground? I also have two 4.46 and 4.03 from Julia, they are about three weeks younger. The 4.46 has taken off and looks healthy, although I can't see any future flowers yet. Thanks, this is my first year.

Hi Tim!! I wish I could answer the question for you concerning the 4.80 Wright.

I have two tomatoes growing from two double mega blooms on one plant and one tomato growing from a four fused bloom on another 4.46 Diehl.

Today it appears that I have a tomato from a three fused bloom set on one of my 4.03 Diehl plants which is a Mega Marv.

Since transplant I've been bottom and foliar feeding 10-52-10 which is a bloom boosting fertilizer. It's very high in phosphorus which the plant needs for bloom production. Once I have the majority of my first tomatoes set I'll switch over to a more balanced fertilizer like a 20-20-20 for the remainder of the season.

No worries Tim the season is very young, just get some phosphorus to the plants and you'll see your bloom count go up.

Addendum, Tim my 4.46 grew from a truss approx four feet above the ground. With this being said, the ideal orientation and placement for a giant tomato to reach it's fullest potential is on the first fruit truss which is located approx. 12 to 16 inches above the ground.

It is very desirable to have mega blooms on the first fruit truss due to the then set tomatoes ability to utilize nutrients in a notably more efficient manner than one much higher on the plant.

I have said this before. If you have tomato seeds that you don't know the parentage of and you want to be involved in growing giants, don't plant those seeds. Otherwise the value of any seeds you produce is lessened.

The 4.80 Wright 2012 Tomato F-5.51 Megamarv 2011 M-open and officially weighed at PGPGA Altoona,PA. Seeds that were sent out were clearly marked on the envelope. The best of luck with your growing season. Tom Wright
