Two of the clubs I belong to have indicated they may have a contender for the 8 pound Tomato. If so who gets the GPC money? Will it be the first 8 pounder or the largest 8 pounder by weight? Should GPC authorized sites get special consideration or is some guy who weighs at the butcher shop going to take it?

It has to be seen by a GPC rep,so I dont think a Butcher shop alone will work.

For a new world record and the Guiness etc the bar is set higher. Can't recall GPC Rules on this but for Guiness it would be worthwhile to make a video with scale, tape and witnesses and someone more expert regarding tomatoes to assure that it is truly one tomato and not two. 8 pounds is very special and not so easy to grow. It ain't over till it's over. I am always a bit skeptical. As they say in pumpkins, "The bullshit stops when the tail gate drops."

It would be awesome to see the first two 8 pound tomatoes in one year.

7.75 lbs. is a 28-year-old world record, and 30" CC could very well put it at 8+ lbs., provided lobing, crevices and flattening are not too severe. It would be great to know what all three CC's are measuring!

If indeed this (these) surpass Gordon Graham's record, this accomplishment should be a significant media event in my opinion. Even have a Guiness representative on sight, along with TV crews or whatever. These days, 28 years is a very long time for a horticultural record to stand!

Let's hope the 8 pound barrier does finally fall and it is VERY WELL documented!

Exciting to say the least!! It is rumored that as we speak a possible 8 pounder is currently growing in southern Ontario.

No, I'm not making this up.

Southern Ontario is to giant tomatoes as is Rosewell, NM is to UFO's.

It looks like there are lots of "MEGABLOOMS" out there this season. I expect someone will break through the 7# barrier this season, but hitting the 8# barrier will be a feat worth celebrating. I my opinion, it's harder to grow a 7# mater, than it is to grow a 1800# pumpkin. Growing an 8#er will be as big a feat as growing a 2500# pumpkin. Good Luck to all.

This is getting to be somewhat exciting. Don Langevin told me, as we were trying to put together a book on giant tomatoes, that as soon as people got more knowledge about growing giant tomatoes that the tomato record would fall. He said that when his pumpkin books were first made available to all growers that suddenly the pumpkin weights began to increase and they really did. I did not think this would hold true for tomatoes but then again...maybe?

I'm not on the GPC board anymore but I am the sponsor for the extra (independent source) prize payout.
As for being eligible for this prize money, the only stipulation is to have the tomato recognized by the GPC.
Here is the breakdown again

2015 prize $2,000.00
2016 prize $2,250.00
2017 Prize $2,500.00
2018 Prize $2,750.00

Getting anxious here -

What's the current CC on these contenders and how many days since pollination? Are pictures being posted somewhere so we can feel like we're part of history in the making?

Eddy has been very generous with his support of this quest to break the 8# barrier. We would like to thank him for all the support he has given the sport, the GPC, the GVGO & to the many growers, including ourselves over the many years. He's a great guy with a big heart. Hopefully we'll get to spend your money for you. LOL. All the best my friend.

Thanks Phil and Jane

Just to clarify as I have had a few questions since my post:
The prize money will indeed be paid in US funds and not Canadian dollars.
The prize moneys, when won (probably sooner than later)will be presented to the winner or winners at the GPC Seminar.
So if the 8 pound barrier is broken this year, the prize money will be awarded in March at the GPC convention.
