I just want everyone to know that I am still working on a jacket for Dan MacCoy for this year to honor him for being able to grow a new world record tomato. The old record stood for 26 years. It will be awarded to him at the Annual Pumpkin Convention if he is able to attend. Recall that the green jacket and orange jackets are not awarded by the GPC but rather by growers in the case of the green and Port Elgin in the case of the orange. Many growers expressed an interest in supporting a red jacket. If so, please contact me to find out where to send a contribution. You will be recognized by way of a card to Dan at the time of the presentation. I still hope the GPC will take over awarding these deserved jackets in the future but not necessarily now. A plaque is awarded but you cannot really wear a plaque? Pumpkin jackets based on weight are awarded every year. There will be a red jacket this year at least. Lubadub@aol.com

A good jacket runs around $200. Half of that price is for the embroidery that goes on the jacket. This is not a huge amount but the jacket itself really does look nice and is made by North Face. I suppose one could spend more but the jacket is nice enough that I may buy one for myself but without the embroidery to wear during the winter months. Dan did not want a suit jacket and neither would I have the year I was number one, several years ago. You were number one last year and a jacket for you would have been nice but then you and I never broke the world record. lol. Maybe we should start some kind of a tomato group inside the GPC as did the watermelon growers? We could then award a red jacket to the tomato champ each year? When the jacket is done I will post some pictures of it.

The jacket is moving along. This will be the first one and so it has to be designed from scratch. All in all, I think it will be something Dan will be happy with and proud to wear.

Someone was trying to do this 5 years ago just after Nick & I broke the 7# barrier. I can't remember who it was, but they were going to give out a red jacket yearly to the mater winner. They even asked for our jacket sizes. I wonder what ever happened with them?
Anyway, I still think it's a neat idea. Good luck.

That was Debra Rebel in Oklahoma. She got my jacket size too but that's as far as it went.

Thank you to Uncle Dunkel's and Lee Zappa for their contributions to the Red Jacket Fund. In 2 weeks the jacket prototype should be ready. The process is bigger than I thought. I will try to post a picture if I can.

You are welcome Marv. I hope we can get a few more growers to help out . I know what it takes to grow anything big, it is tons of work. Dan definately deserves it !

I saw the prototype today. When you embroider something on a jacket it not like putting a patch on. There are not as many threads per inch. And it certainly is much more expensive than a print on a shirt etc. When I finally get it I will post pictures so that all can see. Should not be more than a day or two now. I will then send it to Dan as he says he will most likely not be coming to the annual meeting. Marv

Dan's jacket is on the way. Let's hope he really likes it. Thanks again to all who contributed. We may get to see him wearing it soon in his diary.

Forgot to thank Eddy Z. Thank you for helping. Eddy would like there to be a Red Jacket every year. I agree with him but maybe next year there could be another lead person? Who is doing the Green Jacket and are they doing one this year?

According to USPS Tracking, Dan's jacket should arrive at his home today. Lets hope he likes it and maybe he will even post a picture wearing the jacket in his diary so everyone can see. Wear it well Dan. And again, congrats on the new world record.
