The highest paying tomato weigh off in the nation is getting closer..Oct 7th at Gale Woods farm at a suburb just west of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

I thought it would be fun to see the weight you think will win this event. Some of the competitors I expect to see bring an entry: Chris Qualley- who already has weighed a 7 pounder this year,Larry Hill-who already has weighed a mid-5 pounder, Scott Steil-almost 5 pounds so far this year and who has a history of winning the tomato class at weighoffs, Bill Foss-legendary grower, he sent me a picture..i am concerned about what he has under that sheet..it looks big. I also have had a few new growers in the area message me that have nice ones still on the vine. And then there is the rumor of a 26 incher in Wisconsin that might make the trip...

The rules for this contest:
Only one guess allowed. If you make more than one..only the first will count.
No ties- it will be closest either over or under. In case the over guess is the same difference as the under, the grower who made the first prediction will win
Growers who are going to be entering a mater into the weighoff are ineligible for prizes.

Prizes:
Closest guess will win 2 packages of WoW Super Starter Paks. This is enough for 30 tomato plants.
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=282820
Closest and second closest will also win a package of Chris Qualley seeds including seeds from his 7.07 pound tomato.
Good luck in your predictions.

Bill, I am expecting your guess will be disqualifed, maybe mobymike's too. Since there is rule that entrants are ineligble for prizes but no rule against guessing I get to too. Hmmm....thinking, thinking....I see all the high guesses...I should go low...my guess is

5.5 Bob, you might as well leave your 4.37 home. I'm thinking of leaving my 5.5 home. Mike and Bill probably have inside inf.

Larry,I am not at 4.37 yet...i have 3 weeks left to get out of the 3's. At least we don't have Q's 7.07 to compete against. He told me that he sent it in for Early Tomato. Can someone verify that Early Tomato is a GPC event and therefore not eligible for later weighoffs like pumpkins? You will have to try to hold your 5.?? together for 29 days. If you succeed you deserve a special prize.

I blew it. I should have guessed closer to Mike's. Left mine home so I wasn't a contestant and won the WoW Super Starter Paks.( so I'd have a better chance next year.) Mine will make his look bigger. See you there.

Early Tomatoes- fall weighoff
All I can find for Patrick is a listing for Early Tomato. I think you might thinking of this thread Chris:

http://www.bigpumpkins.com/MsgBoard/ViewThread.asp?b=33&p=584579

I am going to email Jeff Reid and see if we can get some clarification. When it is a ribbon riding on it..it is not so important. When there is prize money available it becomes more important.

Chris Qualley felt that he had to make a decision. His tomato was large enough that it might qualify for GPC award at the end of the year. We looked at the rules for Early Tomatoes and noticed the September 30th deadline with 24 hours to submit the entry. I believe he made the choice to not risk the tomato losing weight or rotting and submitted the Early entry. If he would bring the tomato to Gale Woods, I believe it would give two official weights for the same fruit. With potential prize money from both.

We will have to wait for qtip to chime in....I believe he is on his way to Canada for a family vacation. Can you imagine that...taking a vacation right in the middle of the growing season?

I forgot a line in my first post. This contest is open to international guessers. As long as we can get the prize thru your customs..I will ship to you. Feel free to join the guessing fun.

Early Tomatos is Gpc and yes The rules are the same as pumpkins They can not be entered at a previous event or after you have all ready submitted to the Gpc with the same tomato. Jeff

Thank you, Jeff for the quick response. It is official now...if you are thinking about taking a mater to a fall weighoff... you are going to have to make a decision. Will it survive the storage. No double dipping :)

I am sure qtip was just predicting what my tomato is going to weigh. Wixom what is the current leader in the megamutt contest. My entry for Gale Woods will be a megamuttD. I think I should have predicted a bit higher than 4.37. Deadline for guesses is saturday at 8 am. We won't have Porkchops monster but should still be a good contest.

The winning weight at Gale Woods is 5.24 pounds. Looks like Jay Yohe is the winning guesser with a guess of 5.23. I expect to see some big ones from you next year :). The second closest is Tyler with his guess of 5.01. Congratulations, can you email me so I can get your mailling address to send out the prizes.
