I actually use rags that I get from the auto parts store, cleaning rags. Cheap, made out of cotton and soft.

I buy waterproof ripstop nylon fabric off of eBay to use. Make the slings to hang with it.

post hijack/ Is a sling more necessary as the tomato gets ripe...? I'll assume so... And if the fruit begins to turn this is really when the sling has to be under it? Sorry for being a little off topic.

The sling is to stop the weight of the tomato from breaking off the stem. Anytime I get a tomato that is measuring over a pound I sling it with nylon slings. I cut these from queen size pantyhose. My wife really started to wonder when the Amazon package of 25 pantyhose arrived in the mail. This year I might try a few plants with cut up paint strainer bags.

I have always just used white washcloths.
They probably hold moisture from rains longer but I don’t think I have seen greater rot due to them.
Then I place another one on top to shade the fruit.
I generally hold off placing a sling until they are 18” in circumference.

I am going to use cheesecloth. Last year I grew cantaloupes on a trellis and had no problems holding cantaloupes. Tomatoes are lighter so I don't think I will have problems making a sling in a tomato cage. When I am done with the cheesecloth, I could use it as a filter when I harvest seeds.
