How does this make sense. I can dig a hole and put in a cedar post and have too much dirt to put in. But other times of the year I will not have enough dirt to fill in

Easy question. You might have dug your hole in a hole one time and on a hill the other. Or you may not have put the big stones back in the hole, only the soil? Or, the guy next door is stealing your soil? Or your wife or a friend is playing a trick on you? Or you spread it around too much. Or you are just trying to pull our leg a bit.

Which is it this time of year? Soil is loose this time of year. Late summer is when its most compacted. For me.

Never could make sense of something that got bigger the more you took away from it...

The soil is compacted when in the ground, and then is uncompacted when removed.
Or it just reproduces like rabbits when one isn't looking, lol!

My first thought on this is your tamping method. Second thought is post size verses hole size. You don’t want to dig a 10” hole for a 4” post, if tamped properly you’ll run out of dirt. If you dig a 6” hole for a 5” post you’ll probably have dirt left over. Back to tamping, don’t put too much dirt in at one time, tamp it till it feels solid at the end of your tamping tool. I usually use the stick end of a spade. When it feels solid add a little more dirt. Continue this method around the complete circumference of your post till all the dirt is back in that hole. As a kid putting in fence posts my dad told me if you don’t get all the dirt back in, do it over.

You would think when you take post hole diggers and dig a hole in the ground then put a post in it you will have enough dirt to fill it back up cuz of the post will take up lots of room but apparently not. Or vice versa depending on what time of the year is winter vs Summer
