Can I mulch peppers and tomatoes with mushroom compost?Is there something better to mulch with that ya'll would reccomend? I'm new and just trying to learn.This yr I'm just growing eating maters and peppers for practice but next yr I hope to have a big one.

I would say sure if that’s what you got on hand..I’m partial to leaf compost for the maters...has tomato Tim talked you into a soil test yet?...next season starts now!!

I used to buy mushroom manure and at the time it was fairly expensive. It came from caves here in Pennsylvania where they used the mix to grow mushrooms. They got several crops from each load and then when it became nonproductive, they sold it to gardeners. It was originally made from the straw and manure from horse stalls. But when the horse guys started using sawdust in their stalls the mushroom guys started buying spoiled straw bales and mixing it with cow manure and ground up corn cobs. I think that is what you get now when you buy it. I used it but then decided it really was not much better for my purposes than leaf mold and so I switched over. Leaf mold is just old decayed leaves. Leaf compost is manure and leaves mixed together just as an FYI.

Not yet porkchop lol..at the moment I havent any on hand at all.I was looking to buy something.although he has talked me into doing a compost bin.i will be starting it soon.i have a good spot behind the garage I can put it.can I buy leaf compost? I've looked online and I havent seen it anywhere..I live in town and not many trees where I can get it from.thats the reason i was looking into the mushroom compost.i can get pine needles by the bail at rural king..I've read that manes good for holding moisture although it changes the ph of the plant and soil..idk just looking for convenience here in town..

My leaf compost doesn’t have any poop in it. We call leaf mold leaf mulch up this way. Never heard that before...leaf MOLD....I bet the guy that made that up didn’t want his competitors using it.....smart...we also call anything that has green and brown in it , that gets hot and turns black, compost. Sorry for the confusion.

No trees?...yikes!!!....how far would you have to look to find a town that has trees?...with leaves that fall. That collect them for everyone?...

Lol we gave trees in our front yard but no leaves on the ground..that wont happen till this fall and then I wont need it but it will be good for my compost bin 😁

For my eating vegetables I use a mushroom compost garden mix. It includes mushroom compost from the local mushroom farms, bark fines, and sandy loam. Everything including my tomatoes are awesome.

One person who grew many world records from his plants wrote a book (there is a picture of this book in marv!'s diary) and the main thing he says contributes to him growing good plants, is care, and watering, and keeping them weed free. To keep his garden weed free, he takes spoiled hay, and lays blocks of it, about 3 inch thick, if my memories correct, and covers the entire ground with it. This might work if you live in a ciy, and te other things you can always do, are finding animal farms, or collecting all the leaves from the roadside, and use those.

I would think it would take lot of mushrooms to make much compost. They seem to rot down to nothing pretty fast.

The mushroom compost I use started as composted steer manure. They inoculate the compost with their mushroom spores. After the mushrooms are harvested there are spent mushroom parts in there. Mushroom compost.
