I am wondering if anyone believes tomatoes, and for that matter pumpkins, can be grown totally organic through an entire season? Can all the diseases and various bugs we face be handled using only organic substances? Can late in the season nutrient requirements be dealt with using materials that are organic? Can we load up our soil with enough nutrients in the spring to get through an entire season? I have begun to think that the answer in no. I am feeling that a little help is required as we identify problems but only if we see a problem and not as a routine. Thoughts?

I grow totally organic. No pesticides. Only natural elements. Use milk for powdery mildew and neem oil. I put extra than the soil test reccomends on everything always. Hundreds of pounds of amendments.

It is possible! We have different "organic" organisations of farmers and gardeners producing food. There are dfferent definitions of "organic". I know a "Bioland" gardener who produced 922 lbs pumpkin "organic" in a polytunnel.

What rules do you want to follow? Do you want to grow really organic or just greenwashing?

The 1795.5 McCracken was grown 100% organically and if that’s possible then clearly giant tomatoes are. The primary factor for the 1795.5 was covering the entire greenhouse structure with netting to keep the bugs out and not have to spray. Obviously that would be much easier to do for a tomato plant.
