Many years ago, I planted a 7.18 Harp 2009. This was an old seed when I planted it. Christy Harp was kind enough to send it to me, long after it was available in auction. I grew it the next summer, and compared it to the current top of the line Big Zacs. It's initial growth was very slow. Mega's were rare on that plant. I am wondering, did I not give it a fair chance. Should I have waited until I had fresh offspring from the 7.18 to compare? How much weight is fresh seed advantage?

Assuming everything else was favorable, you probably just got an unexemplary seed, genetically. If it had really great genetics then they should have shown up eventually. My understanding is the megablossom cells begin to divide at around the 4 leaf stage... you cant see them yet but they're somewhere inside the growing tip. So at that point its game-on. But whether the vigor matters prior to that, I think this is just speculation.
