Fellow tomato heads. Pork Chop has been funding the prizes and trophies for this competition since inception and I think we as a group should help offset those costs. I do not have the answers but am hoping you all would chime in to what you think. Compared to a weigh off, this is a smaller amount of money to raise, but significant to be done by one person.

If Elaine and my kids want to help they could start some plants and do a roadside stand. Tomato plants in late May are like lemonade in late July... An easy sell. Every gardener wants a big vigorous heirloom tomato. The giants do struggle to ripen anything beyond the 2nd truss in a timely manner though so... Does anyone have a one page cheat sheet already written up on how to grow a giant tomato bush? Like, what to do, and what results to expect...? And, maybe add to that, info about the contest. It could bring some new growers into it. A medium sized tomato plant and a one page info sheet for $5. Easy sell ;) Figured I should chime in despite the fact that I am supposed to be taking a break from this competitive gardening stuff.

Starting extra tomato plants is easier than starting extra pumpkin plants.

silent auction? Maybe try a 1 or 2 day instead of a week or 2. Does not even need to be very big.

Even sell some seeds at a set price like Brad did plus shipping which does not need to be the high priced shipping method.

I like the silent auction idea as well. We all have way to many seeds to grow and most likely holding on to some desirable ones that would do well at an auction. Plus many of the top tomatoes in the Challenge last year most likely would be donated to the cause. Hell maybe even DAn would donate a whopper or two in the name of the Giant tomato to increase the enthusiasm for next years challenge.

I like the silent auction as well. Once the lot is paid for to a selected treasurer, person who donated the seeds can ship directly to winner.

You could even simply do a small entry fee
