im not sure if this is the place to post this if it is not im sorry, i was wandering if there is any interest in a giant cantaloupe group on here,same as we have on the giant tomato page, just post your pics of your lopes on the scale and the biggest at the end of the year wins and so on,its working out well on the GTG group,sharing seeds,and advice on growing giant tomatoes, id like to see the cantaloupes grow the same, just post here if you would be interested and we will see if there is any response.

I got a seed or two that might grow a big one I used Organic Kelp Meal Humic Acid and I think the most important is Symbios Pumpkin Pro Mycorrhizal Innoculant You can find everything you need at http://www.extremepumpkinstore.com/
I put them in my pumpkin patch the OM was 15.5 my PH was 6.8 I put two bale of pet moss and work it all in before I put the plant in I planted on May 5 but this year I am not planting till the last of June so they might make it to the pumpkin weigh off
I used a 5 gallon bucket I put about 1/4 manure horse and cow let it set over night drain it off then used 3 cups per 5 gallon per plant and water it in good once a week Soluble Kelp and fish once a week
I try to set 2 or 3 at the same time when they get around 10 pounds I keep the best one and you will have to pull all the little ones they come on fast I have found that if you try to push them they will blow they love full sun if they don't get it they will not do as good if they even think about turn orange...pick them and weigh then they are done and they are ready to eat and they are very good I will be putting a wire cage around the cantaloupe this year good luck Vic

Thanks everyone that's shared cantalope seeds; a large number will be handed out locally too. :) See you Friday the 10th.

Glenn, now that the interest seems to there, maybe we should ask the GPC to reinstate the lowly Lope, as a category, again. Maybe, (because of it's ultra-fast ripening & rotting sequence) to allow off site weight's like they are currently doing w/ maters!!! Peace, Wayne

Hello ga.beeman and welcome, to win/place the cantaloupe will have to have a pic taken on a scale with the weight showing in the pic its the only way to make it fair for everyone,Anyone can join and show there pic with no plans to weigh there lopes thats fine as long as they are haven fun growing, but to be placed at years end it has to be pics on the scale, im thinking of maybe adding another class that is taped around the lope and length that would be three classes for everyone, but still have to have pics showing the tape. LET ME KNOW WHAT YALL THINK ABOUT THAT, if yall like it we will keep it if not we will throw it out. TREETOP

I've found a good place to weigh them is your local Post Office -- they usually have a nice digital scale in the lobby for weighing packages that is nice and accurate and if you go in late in the evening there isn't much of a crowd.

I learned this by accident last year when I weighed a tomatoe. The clerk that weighed it asked me how much I wanted it to weigh! He merely pushed down on the scale with his hand and momentarily the weight "froze" at 9.00 pounds. And, as the scale was catching up to the actual weight, I could have snapped a photo at any point between 9 pounds and the actual 3.25!
I guess I can't throw my name in the hat now can I?! LMAO!

If anyone is interested, I have seeds from a 28 and 35.5 cantaloupe that I grew last year. The 35.5 was the Ky record until someone grew a cantaloupe inside a 5 gallon bucket. ;}

If you havent signd up please do jan 1 this cantaloupe contest closes till next year. here are the simple rules (1) contest will run till nov 1 then closes unless everyone says they are done for the year then we will close before. (2) cantaloupe is to be weighed with pics showing the weight.(3)cantaloupe weighed will have pics with tape showing circumference not that hard i do it with tomatoes (4) cantaloupe will have pics of tape showing for length. all lopes in the contest have to be weighed out of that there is winner and places for weight/circumference/lenght each a class of it own. and the only class you dont have to have weight is the ugly class. lets have fun not get started with the BS and grow giant lopes and get others interested. GOD BLESS,TREETOP

beeman -- IF the person you're looking for has a growers diary - if you look at it there is an envelope pic near they top of the pages - click on that and it will open a box to send an E-mail to them. For those that do not have a diary it is a waiting game for them to see the post and get in touch with you ! ( Perhaps we should put together an E-mail list for the cantelope growers and forward it to the others) - by my count we have 26 signed up for this so far - looks like it should be interesting next season - look forward to hearing the updates as the season progresses !
@ everyone - I opened another thread with an idea for the end of the season next year - have 5 positive responses so far but would like to get others to respond also to get feedback on what others thought of the idea - so if you get a chance read through it and respond.
