Went out saturday morning and culled a lope that weighed about 10 lbs . had three other nicer ones ... went to check them Sunday morning all of them had a dark soft spot on top.. at this point i have no other lopes set . strange they all went down on the very same day.. they were on 3 different plants....THE END.. they were not even the same age...Go figure had to be the heat ...

Sunburn! Probably happened same day.
Take an old sheet and tear into pieces large enough to cover them next time. I try not to let much touch the ground. It wicks up water (if you have any). Not the end . Start again, there's time. I've got sprouts 2 days old for late season.

My lopes are flopping bad during the heat of the day, and stand back up when the heat/sun lets up some. Well yesterday I installed a mister large enough to mist 2 plants, and have a timer that is going to mist 4 times today. I can't wait to get home this afternoon and see if they are wilted or if the misting helped. I'm sure someone else has tried this and what kind of results did you get?

@Ice Man -- the mister should help a lot -- I lightly water mine every couple hours here (pretty much the same as misting ) and it keeps them from drooping in our 100+ degree weather (though we have a very dry heat with low humidity so a bit of water helps lower the temp quite a bit)
@ Kirk - sorry to hear about the Lopes but as others said still plenty of time.

Should have figured they were shaded. Sounded like some I've seen that were sunburned. Any pics?

What did you shade them with? Did you have it laying right on the cantaloupe and is there a chance whatever you were using got wet sometime during the day? I have found that putting 4 stakes around the cantaloupe then tying the shade material up off the cantaloupe works ok.

Sorry to hear about those burning Kirk. Not much you can do to lopes in this heat. The mister might help. Ussually if it stays over a 100 and I water mine enough to keep them from flagging the vines and stumps start to rot. Already seeing some problems on one of mine. Did they stop growing? I had a big one before with a burnt spot it just got flat on top but kept growing. Probablly could have won the ugliest lope contest. It was shaded too.
