I am growing. for the first time and wonder do you cull down to one melon on each plant?

Depends -- are you going strictly for size or would you be happy with several large ones. -- The plant can handle more than one and still produce large melons but if you want the largest possible then culling to one is probably the best after determining which is growing the fastest\has the best location\best shape etc. since each fruit will use some of the plants energy to develop.

Also if you do cull down to one and something happens to it (ie. pest, crack, broken vine, etc.) then you got nothing but a nice large plant to look at !! -- So again really depends on what you are growing for and whether you have more than one plant going.

I always leave two,because of splitting. I could be wrong but I think the plants handle two very well. The ones I have tried growing one on split most of the time. You might get a few more pounds with one but it is a gamble. JDFan is right if you decide on one or two pick the fastest growing, shape, bloosom thickness, vine position are considerations.

If you lightly press on the bloosom and it feels firm it seems to be a good indication of rind thickness.
