I have also grown 55 James with great results. This year I'm looking at 44 Holloway, 56.7 Lyvers, and 55 Kent.

I have grown alot of them. The 46.6 Westfall, 16.2 webb, 48 Dawson, and 44 Holloway have produced 50+ pound lopes. The 16.2 and the 48 have produced two 50+ per plant. But like Josh said the 46.6 is the top of my list. I lost my 42 Moore that grew the 56.7 Lyvers, last year but can't wait to give the other one a shot. There have been some big lopes grown on the 55 James but I have had terrible luck keeping them alive. The 46 Westfall is very hard to get. My 57.75 and Josh's 50.5 are both from it, and there are some of them left.

I also have a secret old school seed for this year if they will germinate, that will be fun to grow.

What is everyone shooting for on the 46.6 westfall. What makes it better than some other great seeds. Just wandering I don't know anything about this seed

I think it's because it has produced a couple 50+ pound fruit. No doubt in my mind there are other seeds just as good out there but very few get grown each year. With that said I'm not ready to part with my Westfall seeds. That 55 James is a good seed. Pick another one or two to compare. Very few growers plant more than 1 lope so it's hard to make a fair comparison and genetic progress is slow.
I know of a little 8.0 genetic cross that can produce thick walled lopes well into the 40's and maybe beyond in the hands of the right grower. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=167516

From what I've seen the 46.6 seems to go heavy and don't split as easy. Lot's of good stuff out there. The 2 I have the hardeset time with are the 55 James and the 21.3 Crosby, but as long as I have those seeds I'll plant them. Here's my line up so far. 57.75 Holloway 46.6 Westfall 42 Moore 56.7 Lyvers 55 Kent 50.5 Scherer 47 Scherer 39.8 Wellington

Totally agree with Josh and Dave. The 46.6 produces thick walled lopes and I have not seen one split yet. I think it and the 8 Cantrell produce the thickest walled fruit. The Bright line produces by far the fastest growing fruit but they split easy. The 48 Dawson from the Bright line is the ultimate in fast growth in my opinion.

With that said this is what I would like to see. 44 Holloway girth X 48 Dawson length and speed X 46.6 or 8.0 Density. Hopefully this time I will have sometime to work on it this summer. Mehdi Daho made a cross between the Bright line and the girthy line that should be a great seed, just needs to see more dirt.

There seem to be three different types of giant lope 1. The very orange girthy type, large plant (most common these days) Ex: 46.6, 55 Kent, 2. The Yellow long type, small plant ( the one Mr. Bright sells) Ex: 48 Dawson, 51 Holloway, 45 Webb 3. The well shaped yellow ones, large plant Ex: 55 James, 21 Crosby

From what I understand they all originated in North Carolina. Different growers didn't trade many seeds resulting in different looking types. Not sure about the others but I think the fat orange ones are from the Rocky Mount growers. Maybe Mr Bright will see this I think he might know the origins.

Does anyone on this site have some big cantaloupe seeds they can share with me or I will buy them. If there are any to spare from you all please let me know. Thanks. PS:Holloway- Gene Daughtridge back,(I guess 10-15 years ago)grew a 65 pounder and he was from Rocky Mount,NC. I believe he has passed away now, but not sure.

Good to see you back H3. I believe Mr. Dauhtridge's lopes are the most commonly grown seeds these days and the current world record is likely from this line based on shape. As far as I know all 60+ pound lopes besides the WR were grown near Rocky Mount or Raliegh. Though that is a short list.

Holloway, It seems that there was great competition between Daughtrigde, Bill Rogerson and Ed Weeks. Gene is listed in the 1998 Guinness World Record book as the recorded holder of the largest cantaloupe at 62 pounds which he set in 1991.

Okay Holloway, send me seeds but I need your email address. To all others growers,I have enough seeds now to mess with after I get Holloway's...so please don't offer me anymore....but I do appreciate the consideration. Wish you all a great growing season.
