Can someone tell me what variety or varieties of cantaloupe were the ancestors of today's giants? Thanks.

All of the recent extra large cantaloupes trace back to Don Murphy of Pink Hill, NC. He gave some old seeds of an almost world record to the Giant Watermelon Growers Club to sell, auction and share. The growers that got some of those seeds have had amazing results. I refer to these seeds as the Pink Hill type. Don got his seeds from Gene Daughtridge (sp?) who grew world record cantaloupes from this line. You can find Gene in some of the old Guinness World Record books. There are lots of giant cantaloupe seed lines with varying shapes and rind color shades but the Pink Hill type is what you want for large size.
