I offer a gallon of fish hydrolysate for first place in all 3 categories. If 1 person wins 2 or 3 categories only 1 gallon will be sent. If a non USA grower wins, all I ask is for the difference in the freight costs. I suggest the winner in each category share their seeds with the other contestants. Any grower that would want some will send the winner a SASBE. That way we all win. I've never run a contest so if this idea sound goofy let me know your ideas.

OK, I have all the names along with the categories each grower is competing in saved as a spreadsheet in my diary. It might not be viewable until tomorrow. If yours is blank please indicate which category you want to compete in. 6 growers need to pick their category(s). So far 22 growers!

23 competitors, this will be an interesting contest. I need Billp, Peace Wayne, Dutch Brad, Captain Cold Weather and Stl Kenny to determine the category they want to compete in. I don't want to sound all official but I am coming up with the rules, deadlines etc and will post them soon.

I would like to enter the 2 sunflower categories. Will any sunflower pollinate any other sunflower or are they self pollinating?

Tim, not a pro, but if you have one sunflower this year!!! The seeds will germinate next year!!! They will cross if allowed to!!! Not sure about the "any" part tho. Could be strains of sunflowers that will not cross? Lots of oddities on the market??? Don't know if they will cross w/ the traditional large ones or not? My guess is Yes...so isolate yer giants!!! is my opinion!!! Peace, Wayne

Sunflowers will cross with any other sunflower within a few kilometers. Isolating them will be impossible. Some growers put nets over the heads of the sunflower to keep the bees out. That means doing a lot of hand pollinating.

I just wondered what the differences are and if they can cross each other. The giant sunflower seeds I have are different sizes both are solid black but the 189" Vincent '09 are really long where as John Nieuwenhoff's are short but really fat. Both sets came from sunflowers that were right at 16ft. Not that I'll have that luck in getting them that big.

Any sunflower can cross with any other sunflower. I grow all my tall sunflowers in one garden and grow all my wide headed sunflowers in another. They are both in my yard seperated by 100yds or so. There is also a big barn right in between. My theory is that the talls will mainly cross with the talls and the wides with the wides. I realize bees fly between the gardens but it's the best I can do. Seeds come in all shapes, sizes and colors. The only seeds that are particularily long and narrow that I know of come from Mongolian Giants. They can get 1.5" long.
