The second thread in this forum. Who grew the tallest corn, tallest sunflower, and largest sunflower head this year.
This year my sunflowers crapped out, but I had a couple of 13' 7" stalks using corn I received from Grower Steve.
I saw on the GVGO website there was a 26' tall stalk grown by one of their members this year. Wow!
How did everyone do?

Due to "personal issues" I was unable to maintain the contest I started, I apologize. Things have settled down a bit and I can pay more attention to my gardening passion. My tallest sunflower was 234" or 19'6" that's with the roots the way they measure them in Port Elgin. I tried something new and limited the sunlight they got to try and make the stretch I think it worked a little but not as good as John B. Congrats John, so far you have the tallest SF!

They do not measure the roots on corn or sunflowers in Port Elgin. Congrats on 19' 6" sunfloer, Steve, very respectable. I did not get any corn seed off the plants this year. I will have to start the corn a little earlier next year,( thinking the March 1 st for the seed plants and stay with April 15 th for the competition plants.) It is very important to stake and tie the plant daily to get tall plants.

BTW mine was 219" or 18' 3" without the roots. JLB I stake and tie mine everyday. What else are you doing to gain an extra 3 feet? Full sun, limited sun, extra fertilizer etc?

A good helping of cattle manure in the fall, fertilize and water. what ever the pumpkins get, plus extra nitrogen in the way of urea pellets, when the pellets disappear add a little more. If you over do it all growth will stop for about a week.

Peace, the seeds on both (mine and brothers were short, fat, white seeds. I hope that helps.
We got nicer shaped heads from the black seeds, but not as big (18" heads). The stalk bases on the big white ones were around 3" diameter.I think I posted a pic of my head in my diary.
