Always start in ground. For some reason they don't do as well when planted in pots first. I still do the pots when I don't have the choice but would rather not.

I have been doing styrofoam cups for years with good success. I grow tall sunflowers for early fair so I need to start them indoors early. I just transferred 19 to the garden 3 days ago and they are doing fine. Each one is around 8 inches tall.

I start mine in the ground. They always do fine. I don't worry about the plants. I worry about birds and squirrels. Have a battle plan ready.

Because sunflower's have a tap root, I always start them in the ground. You only need about 85 days and they will be headed out, so you have lots of time yet.
