Any of you all heard of "Fat Boy" Field Pumpkins? A friend of mine owns and runs a Pumpkin Patch here in midwest Illinois and I took my daughter out to get her gourds and other fall type things she likes to gather up for displays........when I saw the size of FP's he had on display I couldn't believe my eyes...BIG FP's. He told me this is the first year he planted these type.."Fat Boys" I picked two still on the vines out in the field, a 69 Lb'er and a 89 Lb'er.. One short and really ribed out and the other nice and tall they got that big with no special treatment and many on the same plant. I was wondering if you all have ever heard of anyone doing well with this variety of FP for competition? I've got tons of seeds out of both and kept them seperated if any of you want any. Field Pumpkins have many varieties...Names are just like trademarks. Seed companies breed and name things to sell them.

- I've been growing fp for over 25 years and never heard of fat boys - I googled it and under cookinfo.com they stating that it was introduced in 1997 by Robson Seed Co. (now Petoseed)

There was a listing under "Longface" pumpkins which I have never grown due to the weak orange color. Were the fat boys tall or more round? Did they have a corky brown stem (like AG's) or a hard green stem. There is a photo on google of them with the corky stem meaning they are maxima.

I may be interested in some seeds also but without knowing what they crossed with or if it is a hybrid you are not sure what will grow. If you can, ask the grower where he got the seeds. Linus is correct - it is probably a commom pumpkin under a different name. Tom

I'll get that Info to you whitey, Linus Van Pelt I agree about the marketing end of it all and swaintech these had big very nice squared off dark green stems as field pumpkins do, definetly pepos not maximas. These were also dark orange and the 69 lb'er was short and fat with nice ribbing and a really nice witches hat looking stem and the 89 lb'er was very tall. They weren't really thick walled but very big bodied so I figure if I can feed them right who knows what we could get out of them. I can't believe I didn't take picks of them. I even carved jack-o-lanterns for my daughter out of them and didn't take picture...brain fart!! Thanks for the info about them coming out in '97 swaintech. These things are doing great in the hot box in the basement just checked on them..will put some pics of them out tomorrow. You guys can watch my diary for the growing and grafting I'm going to do with these things. Thanks for the input.

...up to 30 lbs. my foot, try 89 lbs. lol. The photo on google may in fact be wrong..I'll check it out. Called my buddy and he said they were defintetly "Fat Boys" and they are pepos. He told me also he had tons of cuke beetles with little loss of the kins.
