Operation Pumpkin will also include a pumpkin carving invitational and the SOGPG will help by way of providing pumpkins. This event is currently being organized by Operation Pumpkin committee chairman Jason Snyder and a well known carver.
The giant pumpkin weigh-off will take place this year on Friday, October 4th at 6:00 P.M. at the intersection of High and Second streets. All other fruits and vegetables will compete on Saturday, with a specific time to be detailed later. All night security will be provided for all entries and the SOGPG will have its prize structure in place sometime around the first week of July after all sponsor donations have been collected and allotted. All pumpkins will be retained for display throughout the festival and the SOGPG committee will retrieve seeds for those growers who cannot stay the duration.
Blocks of motel rooms will be secured for all committee members and participants.

Was October 4th picked by the City or by the GPC? Is this going to be an official GPC site or one that just adheres to GPC guidelines with the exception of previously weighed fruit?

October 4th was picked because it is the first Friday and Operation Pumpkin occurs on the first full weekend of every October. This will be a GPC weigh-off...no previously weighed fruit.

Didn't they have a Non-GPC weigh off last year on 5 October? If so, how many people showed up? I thought you had some pretty big pay-outs for top 20.

Here is what was and now is .The Operation pumpkin people only put this festival together in two months they wanted to be GPC but there was not enough time to do so plus The GPC likes new weigh-offs to be run in a stable way the festival went pretty well but had some hiccups as everyone knows a festival needs to have plenty of money and they did so they thought as one of the sponsors backed out, witch hurt them in the end But the city liked what they did then gave them the rest of the money to payoff everyone. continued on
