My dad went to the farm show and saw one now he is determined to grow a giant one! I figure that controlled genetic seeds are better than store bought ones (just like the AG's). Does anyone know where I can find seeds for him? Would the soil prep be the same as for AG's or do Bushel Basket gourds need special soil requirements? Any info?

i have seeds from the guy in like Kentucky
that a few years ago had the world record bushel gourd,
like 94&5/8 inches around.
i am keeping those, since i may grow them thisear,
but i do have a few of the next size
down at about 88 inches around or so, which he sent me.
have not refreshed my memory on it just yet, but
i am sure this is what you are looking for.

i doubt there is any GENETIC information on these seeds,
and i do believe they have the same preferences as the AGs.

I planted bushel gourds(A friend brought them back from Africa. One plant produced w gourds 40 inches in cir. The plant took up a 10x10 area, thenI cut the vines after that. They bllom at night, not by bee's rather by moths. (hard to believe buyt true.) The vines had aweird scent to them, someof my friends didnt' like them. I could never get the seed to germinate. But the plant that produced the two was started indoors in early april and was transplanted in early may. They love the heat, and a little fertilizer.but I didn't start noticing the gourds till ealy agust, they need a long season, so I recomend starting them indoors. although i am not familiar with their season-length just yet, i do believe that if i knew the procedure for pollinating them i could get an earlier set on them
rather than by the moths, if at all possible.
the females, as i recall, look like kiwi fruit on the ends
of long, green stems, just like a LONG gourd.
so, we can probably apply anything we know or can find out
to the bushel gourds as well.
they are available from the big seed companies
like Jung's and Gurney's, i would think. they just might
not be from an >>>85<<<-inch bushel gourd, that's all.

What's your email springwater?

Any tricks to getting them to germinate? I've always had trouble in the past getting gourd seeds to germ.

Email me at codyjacobus@yahoo.com. Ive tried differant ways to get them going, snipping the edge of the seed seams to work well and make sure the soil is not to moist.
