I participated in the Giant Veggie Seed Exchange again this year and got a seed packet that's hand written. On it says "Westfall 2014, 224 Watermelon, 177 Heavy Gourd. My question is about the 177 Gourd. Is this THE 177 that grew the new World Record or is this a 177 from 2014? Thanks

Doesn't look like the famous 177westfall. That seed is dark brown.

Not sure if this helps, but Dan did not grow a 177 gourd this season. He has grown a 224 watermelon and a 177 gourd in the past. He tends to hand write his info on paper seed packets. Doug

Dan's biggest gourd grown was the 177 in 2012, being dark would be because of age.

Hopefully, Dan will see this thread. I believe he was in the
seed exchange. He has fairly neat handwriting. I checked my remaining 177 seeds, and I would describe them as being somewhat dark brown with a lighter shade near the top. If this describes your seed then you might have the real deal!

Going Green

This is phil. Dan did not grow the 177 this year. His gourd was smaller but it is the same genetics. Dan gave seed to Doug English and he grew a world record using the 177 Westfall. This is same genetics different gourd!
