I am testing how long for seed to germinate, So far I tested 2 identical seeds in same conditions 1 seed has started to sprout a root at 13 days the other may be a dud.
What are your rates
Thanks

i have found they take a long time. probally due to the tough shell. If i cut open the shell they seem to sprout fast if i don't over wet them. 2 weeks vs 3-4 days !

I agree with smoky. Ive filed the seeds and even snipped the mickey mouse ears off to try to get them to hydrate better.85 to 92 degrees works good

What technique do you use to cut open the shell, and by cut open the shell do you simply split the shell or do you remove the whole shell or just the tip etc.
And how do you split the shell it is very hard.
Thanks Otis

i will "snipped the mickey mouse ears off" LOL, just a small amount to let moisture in. I have removed the shell , but thats more tricky. I have broken some doing that.

A good sharp pair of fingernail clippers work well. Practice on spare seeds and you can get it dialed in. The name of the game for me is to snip off as many pieces along the edge as you can without the seed going to pieces. Usually just a couple snips gets the job done without getting carried away.

Find some practice seeds. I file the 2 sides and the top untill i feel the file break through.you can feel a vibration and hear a different sound when you get through the shell.then the shell can peal off. But its best to practice on seeds that you dont need first. You can destroy the seedling untill you get the hang of it.

Snipped the gourd seeds like we talked about Otis and started some today. I snipped both ends by the way on 3 and only on the front tips on 3 others for comparisons on germ duration. I used new sterilized toenail clippers, lol.
