Westham I think they are tougher than AG pumpkins. They can take up just about as much space too. But you can give them much less space and still get big ones. I give mine about 400 square feet.

Mine get about 100-150 sqft, my biggest is 166 and they love the heat. My plants sit and do nothing until the 30C + weather in July Aug here.

In the St. Louis, Missouri area where I grow gourds, it is routine to have 90+ F in July-August. We also have warm nights and high humidity. It is much easier to grow gourds than pumpkins. I believe 85-90 F is probably ideal for growing bushel gourds. In 2014, the 279.5 was grown in weather that was mild and rarely reached 90 F. Rot has not been a problem. I do not use sand but a water porous mat has been useful. The 279.5 grew in a space around 450 sq.ft.

i agree with Doug, They seem slow to start, but look out once they do cause there is no stopping them till the frost hits ! My 270 was grown in about 190 Sq ft, so it doesn't take a huge space.
