I posted in my diary. A picture of my seeds and seeds from another bushel gourd from 2013. The seeds are very different. Are there 2 types of bushel gourds and would it be a mistake to cross one into the other?

Mike,
Your 189.5 seeds looks like a typical (small-seed type) Westfall strain bushel gourd. The 177 Westfall grew the 279.5. The 279.5 seed grew the 200 Lariviere gourd. There is a large-seed type of bushel gourd most notably grown by John Nieuwenhoff. He has crossed the 2 size type bushel gourds and the result is very promising. The 262 Ansems is one example of this hybrid cross. Hopefully, John Ciesielski can provide more info about his 175 seed. If he was growing other gourd types(ex. Af. Kettle) in the vicinity of his Bushel Gourds it maybe an inferior cross. On the other hand, if he only grew Bushel Gourds, this could be a possible cross with a large seed type thus full of potential.

Rick,
Good point. The 265.5 seed was definitely larger than normal coming from the 177 Westfall seed. Personally, I have never seen larger than average seed from the 177 Westfall in 4 years of growing them.

My 175 seeds from 2013, were from the 177 Westfall and were open pollinated. No other lagenaria type gourds were grown nearby. So the 177 must have the ability to produce two different seed sizes. Since 2013 most of my seeds off the 177 have all been smaller.

In 2013 I had only planted two bushel gourd plants, they were both from the 177 Westfall. So the 175 is likely a 177 x self or a 177 x sib or a mix of both self and sib.

I grew two 265.5 Engel's (177 Westfall x Self) last year, sibbed them both, one produced large seeds, the other produced small, long gourd looking seeds. The BG with the small seeds was pollinated from the plant that grew our 250.5.

I noticed a wide variation in seed size too. But based on the weights shown on the seed packs they came from all the seeds produced similar fruits Put a picture in my diary. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=286287
