Per GPC

AND per the bushel gourd group here.

are we going for heaviest gourd all around our bushel specific?

say a 300lb pear gourd is weighed where will it fall being so closely related

i thought it was heavy....so if you grow a 300 lb pear, then if thats the biggest(heavest)....you win. But an offical needs to rule.

Usually the heaviest Gourds are Bushel Gourds. I think we (EGVGA) were the first to call the competition class „Heavy Gourds“. The Gourds are not easy to classify at a weigh off. „Is that a bushel or a pea or an African kettle gourd??“ To make it easier we decided to make it one class. So whatever Gourd you bring to the weigh off, the heaviest wins. And usually this will be a bushel gourd...

I believe the new category is Bushel gourd. So that would take out heavy.

here is the answer from the GPC website...

Heavy Gourds (Bushel, Kettle, Pear) and other varieties:

The GPC has created this competitive class for growers of this type of
gourds, which are the heaviest type of gourds, with prize money and listing
on BP.
It is a Lagenaria siceraria.
These Gourds are to be measured for weight, not for length.
The fruit is round shaped and green, yellow and/or brown in color.
Gourds must be sound, clean and free of cracks, splits, holes and rotten spots
into the cavity. The stem must be removed within 2.5 cm (1 inch) of the fruit

so if its a gourd and the heavest, IT WINS !

to make sense:
If a pear gourd (for example) is weighed and entered on the GPC's results, it should be noted that it was not a bushel gourd or the results should be titled 'Heavy Gourds' and that the parentage should then indicate type of gourd

I guess we will have to see how the GPC clarifies this. The bushel gourd is added as a new catagory for the grower of the year. It gets prizes money and is recognized as bushel gourd. Yes it is a heavy gourd. But has been singled out. So we will have to wait and see.

To my knowledge the new GPC rules will be "Gourd (heavy)".

The thinking in the GPC regarding this new category was to focus on bushel gourds. We also decided to offer growers to enter other gourds in the species of lagenaria siceraria just to allow them to enter them if they so wish. If someone should enter a pear, kettle or other then good luck to you. Bushels are by far the largest gourds out there and that is where we have been putting our energy. The ribbons being sent out are saying bushel gourds, so for this year that's the way it is. This is a new category and maybe in the near future we will have to tweak the rules if it causes many growers to be upset. Narrow it down to bushels only. Thank you

In all my years of growing all kinds of gourds I have found that the bushel gourd has always been the heaviest gourd. Now I have grown some African Wine bottle and pears that have exceeded 100 lbs plus, but have never seen one exceed the weight of a bushel gourd. Crossing can change that. So my choice of a gourd to grow would be a bushel for any weigh contest. If you can find someone who has grown a 150-200 lbs AWB or pear gourd than maybe things might change. There is a lot of good seed stock out there now for bushels, so it shouldn't be too hard to get decent stock to grow and there are many generous and good growers on this site.
