Not seeing many BG growers out west. Is there a reason for that or what??

i would guess that they will grow really well for you. Growers are just starting to take an interest in them, they have only been a GPC category for a handful of years. Bushel gourds don't seem to be hurt by dry conditions either. I rarely give mine any additional water besides what nature provides. They are tough!

I learned this year that they are susceptible to the same, brown rust like fungus that gets on long gourds. I also learned that rabbits and groundhogs like to eat the vines.

This is a late reply, but yes, BG's just love the heat. Here in Phoenix they just breezed through a week of 110 - 115 oF temperatures with no sun protection or leaf damage. You will need to give them lots of water, though. If they start to wilt the sun will fry the leaves.
