Help! My marrow crossed with something else and I don't know how to id this fruit? My plots total 3600 sf and I have a giant pumpkin, peanut pumpkins and another winter squash in the patch. I will post pic later - plant is really healthy and fruit is out of control in growth!

marrows wont cross with an ag,, zucc's, fk's they will,, let it grow,, maybe a sterile seed,, but give it a go,, what are you out,, ??

If a marrow is crossed with a field pumpkin what do you call the offspring....marrow or field pumpkin?

The fruit itself is a marrow. I wouldn't save the seeds though.

@Dutch Brad....I did a cross last year, growing it this year, I really like the looks. I think they will sell and display well in my area.

Will pollinating a FP with a marrow look similiar?

Generally speaking a marrow crossed with a FP will be longer and the FP crossed with a marrow will look like a FP but with bubbly skin. Not sure if this is always true though. In any case, they all seem to take on the colour of the FP, though I have seen yellow ones.

I have also found two new fruits which pollinated past the removal of my peanut pumpkin. I am waiting to see if the lack of the peanut pumpkin presence will produce the marrow fruit. Also, the peanut pumpkin (which I have grown equally well in past seasons) is an heirloom. This is a maxima and is a cross between a hubbard and any unknown pumpkin variety. I have canned or froze both marrows and peanuts and these both eat very well in my house. I have used this link previously and I have contacted the UI Extension and found it is quite common to cross this variety with a marrow.

The seeds are not sterile and can be saved year to year. The result can be eaten, so this will be a good outcome after all.

Saw that Mark. Definately field pumpkin in there. Too bad. Now it must be said that true marrows and courgettes will often turn orange or yellow over time as it is in their genetics. But it usually takes place weeks after being picked.

I grew 8 x 115 Glazebrook plants this year 4 of them grew true marrows the other 4 plants have grown fruits with orange or orange and green skin. Fortunately I've made a couple of sibb crosses between the ones that came true marrow but is the orange likely to be still in there genetics to come back again next year

With open pollinations it is possible that one seed is pollinated by a pumpkin and the other by a marrow. The ones that are true marrows could have been pollinated by a marrow, or were pollinated by a pumpkin but only looked like mum this year but could look like dad next year. You never know what the next generation will be. I received a few seeds from a grower last year from a very large marrow and it grew regular marrows (only a few lbs). Turned out it was an open pollination and likely got pollinated by an edible marrow or courgette last year. I'd say, steer clear away from open pollinations, unless you want to take the risk.
