Steve interesting, the 1048 Engel is the 777 Young selfed and the 359 Foss is 1048 x 2009. I think that 1374 Engel 359 Foss x 1048 will be one of the best current orange seeds. The 1048, 359, and 1374 were all HD winners and all have produced HD winners.

Thats a tough question really? There are lots of pumpkins that will grow super pretty pumpkins around 500 to 1000 lbs.So do you want just pretty or are you after BIG & pretty over 1500lbs??

But where did the 1059 v/m, 993 v/m, 777 young,and the 1048
the 359 foss, pick up there red orange color?
Was it from the 772 Poirier?

All great answers above.The 1059 Vincent McGill is the best all around in my opinion. It was an exceptionally heat tolerant plant as well and was a blast to grow. There are tons of seeds out there with its genetics available as mentioned above.

As far as consistent dark orange with a good shape and smoothness I would have to go with the 811 Gerhardt. The 1048 Engel is a close second.

Luckily for the orange lovers there are many to choose from, thanks to the dedicated orange enthusiasts. For "old" orange my fave is 670 Daigle followed by 1016 Daletas and 846 Calai. You won't find these nowadays so....811 Gerheardt, 827 Gerheardt, 993 Vincent/ McGill, 777 young, 359 Foss and 1374 Engel make my top picks.

What? No 1059 V/M or 772 Poirier, I didn't list them because they are REALLY hard to come by.

FYI fun fact- "Pipster" in Australia is growing a 846 Calai, looking forward to seeing his diary pics.

At the moment I think there are two distinct lines, the 777 and the 811. The 777 is primarily 772 poirier and 904 stelts. The 811 is primarily 603.5 muller and 1230 daletas. You don't see the 603.5 anywhere in the 777 pedigree and you won't find any 772 in the 811. In fact if you compare the 1048 engel, a 777 offspring with a 1030.5 Debacco, a 811 offspring you'd have to go back 6 generations before you hit the first common ancestor, the 1230 daletas and the 904 stelts.

No rebuttals? I must speak the truth? Lol. Us orange growers are an easier going bunch than the heavy weight guys I guess. There are growers with good lines they have bred that fall outside of the two families I established above.

Back in 2009 (I think) the Pioriers sent me a 772. It went mutant on me. Who knows what would have changed if only for a different seed from that pumpkin.

Oh norm, I forgot to specify that the 500 Northrup is in the 772 family, but you and all of the bookworm orange growers already knew that :-)

As a side thought isn't it weird that the 500 was a major contributer but the 1101 seems to have not been?

i'd have to say the 1059 v/m gets my vote for consistant shape and color.
there are several other seeds that can grow very consistent well shaped and colored fruit, (777, 993, 1374, 359, 811, and others), but the 1059 has won tons of hd awards, as well as its offspring.shannons 1048 and 1374 would be a good choice for growers looking to go big and orange, most of the other seeds mentioned here may be hard to find, but there are some of them around if one looks hard enough

matts 1030 (811 offspring) should also be a very good choice for orange seeds, in the pics i have seen, it sure looks very symmetrical and has good orange color.should be a few hd's won from this seed, time will tell.

Here in Michigan a few years back it was the 802 Kurilich. Nice round and symmetric. Almost solid red in color.
I think my 942 (1059 V/M x 802 Kurilich) will be a good one to grow.
It produced the 685 of ours (150sq ft patch) which was brighter than anything I've grown before.

I crossed the 1374 Engel with the 1399 Christensen this year. The plant didn't get a lot of sun so the kin wasn't all that big. I plan on growing that seed this years to see what I get.

I'm a very big fan of the 603.5 Muller 03. What I like is that it consistanly produces orange pumpkins that go around 10% heavy to the chart(at least the 2005 chart). It also produced my heaviest pumpkin to date(1041 lbs. in 2007). I'm guessing this seed is quite rare now. I'm glad I was able to self the 603.5 this year.

Going back further the 940 Mombert 00 produced two very orange pumpkins for Bob Troy. From the pictures, one looked blaze orange, and the other looked red-orange. The coler seemed very consistant, not lighter colored in the ribs as some pumpkins exhibit(just going from the pics I saw). Both seemed to have very nice shape as well. I had a few of those 940 seeds at one time. I was only able to germinate one, and unfortunately I couldn't get a pumpkin to set on that plant.

I grew and selfed a 603.5 Muller last year. I only have about 75 seeds left due to a small cavity. The fruit weighed 552 lbs, was 18% heavy to chart, was 11 inches thick, and was grown in partial shade and heavy clay soil.

Solid orange genetics. And I'm sure you can do better than I did.
