I am shooting for a first weekend in Sept weigh off. I started a 1374 & 1048 Engel, 840 Young, 359 Foss, 1317 Clementz.
What are you planning on growing for big and orange this year?

My son and I are growing 2 of my 1047.5 McWilliams, and maybe one of the 748 that won the Howard Dill Award at Pawnee City. We are going to try a 1710 Stevens/ Hopkins, a HD winner with a background of tan colored ancestors. And we have some seeds from Frank Buglio's HD winner and some from Anthony Hoffman. Both were smaller pumpkins with great genetics, like the 359 Foss. It all depends on how germination goes, as we are also going to try some big ugly pumpkins too.

Iowegian, if you would like some seeds from the Buglio pollinator, the 912 Minor, let me know. My 912 was a 1059 Vincent-McGill x 1250 Kline. I also have seeds from the reverse cross, which produced a 562(uow) fruit. Great orange genetics on both sides.
Pictures in my 2011 diary.

I am thinking of growing the 1998 Jutras here. I am downsizing, I am only planning on growing three pumpkins this year. Two of them will be big and ugly The third one will be the orange one.

I was going to grow nothing but big and ugly this year. I wanted to prove that orange growers can keep up with the big weights if they don't care about pretty. But as it gets closer to germination i am struggling with my love of orange. I might try a 1385 h/j just so I have something orange to admire. Next year might be all orange again.

Lots of great seeds listed from beautiful pumpkins. I was thinking I really wanted to grow the 1317 Clementz but looking at progeny from pumpkinfanatic out of the pictures listed there are some really pretty pumpkins but also a lot of non HD type pumpkins.

I will have to see how they do. After they are up I can pick the two growing the best. Maybe I use the 1317 as a pollinator for the two I am going to grow. I know there are no guarantees. If I want a pumpkin colored pumpkin am I safe with any of my other four? 840 Young (777 Youngx1059 Vincent/McGill) 1374 Engel (359 Fossx1048 Engel) 1048 Engel (777 Youngx777 Young) 359 Foss (1048 Engelx2009 Wallace) have there been any grown from the 359 that were on the non pumpkin colored (some would say ugly) side?

I am growing a 1317 selfed to use as a pollinator for some of mine. I have two 359's selfed that are beautiful dark orange and several with the 359 in the genetics. The 359 is a known producer of BNO...throw it in the mix. I don't know of ugly..only seen it in Orange. Probably half of what I'm growing has the 359 in it.

The 2307 Wallace or 2106 Schmidt both have potential for big and orange. They would make great pollinators. Imagine crossing the 525 Wolf, or 811 Gerhardt with one of them. It would be like the 359 Foss all over again.

That what the 4 kids will be growing they all picked the 444 house. 3 out of the 4 kids picked out the 444 houses just by the plants just that that was crazy only had 3 started but I had like 18 house plants started. House rocks really hooked me up.

But the 2624 actually had a surprising amount of orange on it, wasn't the normal cream color. So we'll see what happens

This is the Howard Dill growing orange board right? I'd grow a 2624 for sure if I had one but in all honesty the 2624 scores a 0 out of 10 on my orange meter :)

Lol^ I agree I agree. Still though, as far as 2,000+ lbs go, the 2624 has a surprising amount of orange coloration

The 2624 itself was not bad, but considering the pollinating plant grew a white pumpkin, you'll be lucky to have much color better than salmon.
