What's everyone's plan for orange in 2018?

Still trying to decide on how many pumpkins I will have next year. If I grow orange it will probably be my 1109. I was really impressed with the glow orange that Mike Haan weighed with that seed at the Anoka weigh off.

I am going with my 1278 and give it some real attention. Some how I grew my 803 Utah HD winner this year with it in a 12x12 ft patch of tilled clay in my front yard.

Of course I will have Engel, Gansert, Young, Karkos and Gerhardt seeds. Can't miss with these masters of orange. Hope to also have a 575 Wolf if I can get one at auction. There are a lot of really good seeds available out there. Would love to plant then all but I don't even have time to plant all my own seeds.

Bnot not much genetic info on your 1109. Please add the info to pumpkinfanatic, looks like a selfed line.

555 Haan was grown from the 1109. I transfered nearly all my seeds from the 1109 to the St Croix Growers Association. Joe Ailts started about twenty plants from my seed to give out to growers. Mike told me he lost his plants..and got a seedling from Joe. When I visited the Anoka weighoff..there was one pumpkin that I could not take my eye off from. When I found talked to the other growers and found out the story I was really surprised. Last year I did not try to grow orange...maybe this year I will try to see what I can get out of the 1109. I only know reports of 3 1109's..Spireite in the UK, Frostbite in International Falls and Mike Haan. The seeds has tossed 1-3 for HD. I have had one request for 1109 seeds...that leaves me 7 seeds left. Ron...do you have any seeds from the 555..Kuebico was saying that seeds were unavailable. The 555 was selfed also, that would be the next generation of selfed seeds...this seeds should be getting to be pure beauty orange....it will be up to grower skill to get them big.

The 555 went on display at a event and unfortunately was tossed including seeds afterwards. Just another example of people not holding up their end of the bargain. This happens all to often when selling or renting your pumpkins for display. I suggest those that are going to do this, get something in writing.

I would caution the growers that win a 1059 seed at auction...they may not look pretty when you receive them. With great care..you can get them to sprout. They may have green streaks on the seeds, and they may cracks. This is one of the ultimate HD seeds. I am not sure how these seeds were harvested...but they will show their age. This is one of the oldest, best HD potential genetics there is. If you do try to sprout one of these old beauties..give it your best effort. There are not many left.

Our 907 is a 1059 selfed and has grown a couple of HDs and is a much newer seed to germ. We still have a few left if anyone is interested.

Was there any that stood out this year?
Also wondering if 1385, 2106, 2307 produced anything worth while this year. Tried looking on here and pumpkin fanatic but came up with very little.

No disrespect intended, some of the posts are representative of true orange, some are not. Choosing a seed with proven parents/grandparents on both sides is a better bet than going for a big a$$ fruit with questionable lineage. The classics- which consistently produce HDA potential are the way to go. Any pumpkin can go orange, their respective offspring almost always reveal their true potential. I won't bother to list the giant duds that failed to deliver, rather go with the ones that either delivered or were crossed with ones that delivered. Just my 2 cents.

Very orange and very pretty. Picture can be found on PGPGA.com website. I also grew a 1385 but it did not have the deep orange like Mr Beard or Quinn’s had. I lost my fruit on my 1044 Gansert plant at 300 pounds. It was very orange and had a nice shape to it.

So I am joining the orange club hope you all don’t mind. I know you don’t because I can see the friendship you all share. So my choice is my 925 Eisenhaur it has a lot of promise I think but we shall see. Hoping to add a nice bright orange pollinator to it. A work in progress

What are yalls thoughts on the 2230 x 1059 and reverse cross?

12/19/2017 1:04:04 PM

Orangeneck (Team HAMMER)

Is this a hypothetical question or is this cross already out there? Because you will probably get a nice pretty pumpkin on the 1059 plant and a turd only a mother could live off the 2230. I’ve tried crazier ideas but I think that is the most likely outcome. So best be sure the 2230 goes huge and the 1059 does what it does.

Well there have been alot of really orange kins from the 2230 Wallace that have won the HDA... just thought adding the 1059 may give it more orange...

There have also been a lot of pale white or salmon off the 2230, so I would not say it is a huge gamble to think it will grow orange

New to the AG world, but giving it my best shot. Grew some generic AG seeds last year and learned a lot. Got all the highs and lows as I've read from many others on the site, all in one year. Going with a 907 Young, and probably a couple more from Young as well. Ready for another wild ride, and head-shakes from the wife. But the joy on the kids faces makes the effort completely worth it.
