I am still sitting on some classic older orange seeds. I am thinking of pollinating them with a big orange pollinator. What do you think is the most consistent big ( has produced kin’s in the upper 1000’s) orange producing AG. I have been researching but the lack of pictures posted for many progeny ( most are lucky if 1 of 3 have a picture)makes It is difficult to know how consistent of Orange are produced. Any input will be appreciated.

Is the 1317 Clementz a consistent enough orange producer to pass the test for you?

I would try Werner's from this last year, if I was going for big and orange this year. 1556 Reeb seems to be good... It started a line that has thrown nothing but true orange. Might not of remembered the number correctly. But I do not know of any 1600 + that have pure true orange.

1810 Werner has a solid track record.

Joe, currently I’d go with the 1810 Werner or 1501 VW.

Why not use your 742 Joe? It grew my PB 1303 and it was deep orange color.

1501 VDW is too inconsistent. still throws cream and oddly shaped fruit.
Go with a selfed 1501 with confirmed suitable color/shape.

Joe, I fully agree with your statement, but until we get to this next level I think the same can be said for almost any seed over 1500 pounds that has a chance of orange in it.

I agree with 1810 Werner as a candidate.
2112 Skinner could be a good choice, though some of its progeny don't have the best shape (low ribs). Still I think its a good candidate for selfing (am considering it myself).
1501 has been grown enough now that its pretty orange progeny should be selected instead of the parent.
Top 2019 prospects in order of size: -Werner's 1885.5 (1501 X 2112). 1955.5 (2112 X 1937 Werner) is also 3/4 2112 1/4 2145 and could be very good, but the 1937 went down before it was mature. -Wagner's 1780.5 (1810 X 1501). Its pollinator was also a looker (1318.5, I've been told that seeds were not recovered) -Rea's 1533.5 (1501 X 1810) and 1382.5 (1810 X 1501) both had good color. -1464 Brown. Best looking 1501 self I've seen. Haven't heard whether Chris got seeds and haven't seen at auction.
As for classic old orange seeds, I'm considering growing a 1585.5 Werner 2014 and selfing it.

you will not regret growing and selfing the 1585 Werner; even IIIIIII had a couple of super-orange (300-400 lbs.) sweeties off of it, both very dark orange; i crossed it both ways with the 1385 H/J and will someday see the results of those endeavors - my initial result in '19 WAS decently orange from having pollinated with it in '18 - eg

I’ve been keeping quiet about the 1885.5 Werner until I secured mine. But I had to bid so damn high to get those 1059s the other day that I’m not sure I’ll still be looking for those this year. So yeah, the 1885.5 is my top pick for the 2019 seeds. I saw the 1780.5 get weighed and that’s been on my mind as well.

Jim, I really an leaning toward the 1885.5 for some but the 1464 brown and 1533.5 Rea will be in my plot so they will be available for pollinating also. Congratulations on the 1059 seeds. One of the best ever along with your 811.

Thanks for the recommendation on the 1585.
I saw that Illinois has the Brown seeds--they've got a GREAT selection of big orange potential. Props to them for offering some different seeds.

Really don’t need any more seeds but have my eye on several lots in the Illinois auction. Have to support the home state club.

What about the 1872 Sippel (1501 selfed) 2nd largest 1501 grown in 2019. I did not see it in person. But the picture on the Wisconsin Giant pumpkin growers Facebook page looked nice.

Thanks for the tip, Pharmer. The 1872's entry in Pumpkin Fanatic isn't linked to the 1501 correctly--I didn't even know it was out there.

Seeds from the 1780.5 are available. Craig is correct I do not have any from the 1318.5

I hate to be a momentary downer, but i think the terms 'Consistent Orange Producer' and 'Consistent Orange Pollinator' are two different things. Obviously, with the spelling differences, lol, and I am NOT quoting anyone, FYI; See, what I also had thought woulda been great back in '06 would have been to pollinate a (Big and Ugly)-producing seed's fruit with the pollen from a super-orange-producing (Orange and Lovely) seed/plant that, no matter what, would result in each, or at least either, of the new seeds being a hybrid of the biggest and orangest traits ever, but i have never spent the months and years and so on to fully research it to where i could say, 'Hey, THESE two are the ones'...it's always been hit or miss, especially with the AGGC going out of commission, and even then, i don't recall from before 2011 if i ever planted .125 of the seeds i had made anyway - there were always newer and more-exciting seeds from even-more-recent years to be grown---what i have spent a lot of time even today doing is looking on Pumpkin Fanatic for a super-orange-PRODUCING seed that, when used as a POLLINATOR, results in seeds in the NEXT generation that ALSO produce super-orange OFFSPRING, regardless of what the POLLINATED seed/plant WAS OR LOOKED LIKE; >look at seed/look at progeny/orange all-round? good! >look at next seed/look at progeny/big, ugly, orange, heavy, all 'so what'? >look at RESULTING seed's RESULTS from the above CROSS>>>Orange? + Heavy? = Beautiful? Well, maybe even that, too! That is what we want, right? Yeah, i did not see any that do what i have mentioned (tell me of any?) ...although i thought i was onto something with the 1770 Lieber/1495 Stelts/3 Kaminski seeds, but, not enough pictures!

My point is that 'we' cannot just say that a seed grew the desired result in '18 or '19 and therefore it can be used immediately as a 'consistent orange pollinator'. I'm sure there is something to be said for if the pollinated seed/plant IS also an orange producer to begin with, like, genes and alleles reinforcing each other, etc.
Luckily, i won't mess around with 'consistent' or 'consistently-orange' terminology or i'll (and you'll) be going to the liquor store early today, lol! but, since i typed it all, and it's still wrong, anyway:
Consistently-Orange Producer: Mostly, if not 'always', produces orange offspring;
Consistently-Orange Pollinator: Causes pollinations BY it to result in seeds that are now Consistently-Orange Producers;
i was looking through my '06 - '08 diaries just now and may have a couple that do just what i just said we need to do, on my personal, <= 912.5-pounds PB scale, lol---even i'm doubting they'll germinate...well, there's always THIS year, lol---
PS---if not done already, how about someone do some 2145 McMullen X 1501 VanderWielen and the reverse crosses and send me the seeds? man... eg
