It’s that time of year when I am looking at my old seed vault. If you could only grow one seed for orange and it had to be from between 1995 and 2010 what would it be. I started growing in 2014 so do not have experience with the older seeds except what I see in pedigrees. I have inherited a lot of older seeds and know germinating them is very difficult but want to concentrate on the best.

I grew the 731 Stucker (801.5 Stelts x Self) back in 2005. Still the prettiest one I've grown so far.

I grew the 603 Muller 03 several times. It grew reliably orange, and would also go about 10% heavy. My heaviest pumpkin came off the 603 Muller(1041 lbs. back in 2007).

If I could have 10 seeds of any past pumpkin, that were guaranteed to germinate, I'd pick the 940 Mombert 00. Bob Troy grew two of the nicest colored pumpkins I've ever seen pictured, off this seed(654 and 659 lbs I think). Going off the pics I've seen of them, one was a dark, bright, shiny, pure orange(great shape), and one was very shiny, red orange(nice shape). I had a few of these seeds years ago, and only got one to germinate. The one plant I grew of it, I couldn't set a fruit on, unfortunately.

In one of Don Langevin's books, you can see a pic of Bob Troy with the red orange pumpkin that I described. I don't recall which book though.

Thanks to those who have pitched in so far. Will look through my list. I know I don’t have the actual seeds of most listed but will look to see if I have some progeny from them. Any more suggestions?

Um....sorry.....well I guess that was worth stating twice. 940 mombert always gave me good color but with a long tapered pumpkin it was less appealing. The 500 Northrup gave me light orange.846 was a mixed bag and even the orange ones had the orange mottle or flecks....usually a good shape though. Personal pinion in growing for orange is shape can detract significantly from the impact of a bright orange one. 2cents please....or maybe 4 ,,

The 811 was a 2011 seed and the 359 was a 2013 seed.
I'd go with 1059 VM, 846 Calai and 810 Dill.

Certainly will... Please try papeq towel/ dilute h202 then peeling seed coats off when they soften and plant and keep humid under lights with cots partway out of the ground, when the root starts to grow. (hint hint... Tell me this isnt the best method I am pretty sure it is.) Good luck... The rot is the issue... Until they green up.. keep using h202 liberally as needed. I think .5 to 1.5 % works.

i'd be intere$$ted in the 689.5 or its crosses you create with it (self?) woo-hoo- super-interesting to see some listed that i also have and/or, 'Oh, yeahhh, i forgot about that one and..." this'll be a good year to actually intensively grow my own seeds, too and update my WCG listing, lol---eg

agteacher,
You've got some nice orange genetics there! That 820 Sandvik 06 looks like a nice cross on paper. I agree with Shannon, the 801 Stelts and 869 Calia were some great orange producers back in the day. Was that 774 Mombert seed from 2000? If so, it may be the same cross(or the reverse cross) of the 940 Mombert 00, that I mentioned. I can't recall exactly what the cross for the 940 Mombert 00 was. One thing to add, I think there was another 940 Mombert from 1998, or around that time period. I don't know if it was an orange producer.

The first orange pumpkin that really caught my eye was the grown off 810 Dill. The best producing orange for me was the 1059 V/M. My grandsons produced some awesome looking pumpkins from the 359 Foss.

1059 VMG, grew it in 2011. It was a smooth, orange, spherical pumpkin that really tolerated heat.
