I was looking through the progeny of the 1501 on pumpkinfanatic. I wish more growers knew about the site & posted pictures of their pumpkins.(The 1872 Sippel isn't even listed.) Anyway, there is enough info to gather that you stand a fairly good chance at getting an orange pumpkin off the 1501, although not a guarantee. My question is: Does anybody know how many Howard Dill award winning pumpkins the 1501 V/W has produced? I believe there are at least 4.

1872 Sippel is listed, but not correctly linked to its parent. Of these 1501 progeny, both the 1464 and 1872 have HD progeny.

I believe one issue with linking pumpkin family trees is that the GPC results as recorded are not consistent. For example, 1501 is not the same as 1,501.

I think I tried fixing that one last week, but it wouldn't link to the existing 1501 entry

I tried to modify it, but it kept telling me there was an error. But, it seems that putting that little "," in the number could be the issue with properly linking seeds.

I've now uploaded a 667.6 Leach photo to pumpkinfanatic.
My understanding is the HDA is judged on both shape and colour; the wording on the plaque is "Best Looking Pumpkin"
As there is only the winner mentioned at each venue, some very worthy runners-up will have been entirely overlooked.
Given the level of interest in the HDA, perhaps the 2nd place should be recognised and recorded even if there is no runner-up rosette.

Well, you did better than I at getting at least the cross of the pollinator to stick - any chance that the pollinator has any credentials, like, was it also weighed officially and/or maybe it was the maybe 996 Leach UW? Not a big deal, but if I can fix even one family tree, since I can't my own, lol, I'll be better for it - there's no wrong answer. Nice pumpkin, too----eg

Disclaimer: This comment in no way is aimed, directed at nor intended to illicit any response from anyone other than a mere 'thinking it over', if you don't mind; I thought of it and typed it and decided to not delete it for fear of upsetting anyone:
I remember seeing a house paint ad like 30 years ago, where the judging to determine the very best paint was in a closed meeting and the winner was announced via a top representative peeking his head out or leaving, saying, "Glidden wins!" or whatever. One very nervous other contestant says "Ummm, who came in second?"...
The reply was "Does it...really matter?"
I think I know why there's no monetary reward for a HD Award -
Imagine the mayhem.
Now that that's 'out there', a Top 3 HDA System will be put in place;
You know what? I'd be all for it! Man, I've got some seeds...Later---eg
