There has been a resurgence of Orange within the gene pool and from what I can tell it pretty much all goes back to the 1501 VanderWielen. The 2350 Gienger was a 1501 x self and the 1885.5 Werner was a 1501 x 2112 skinner. The 2350 has an impressive list of huge glossy orange progeny and the 1885.5 and its daughter the 2365 Wolf are now legendary seeds that seem to throw Orange more often than not. So My question is where doid the Orange come from in the 1501? The 1501 was a fairly glossy orange with some veining. Its mother the 2004 VanderWeilen was a light cream color almost white that looked to have some cantaloping. A search of its progeny shows six other fruit beside the 1501. Only two of those have photos and they are both very light almost white pumpkins. The grandmother on the maternal side was the 2145 McMullen which was kind of a light salmon color pumpkin with a significant amount of cantaloping. The 2145 was one of the most planted seeds ever. it had a variety of shades in its progeny but nothing that I would call deep orange. The Grandfather of the 1501 on the maternal side was the 2017 Martin which was a light pinkish pumpkin. It only has one progeny listed with a photo and that was a light cream almost white Pumpkin. Looking back at all of the pumpkins in the 1501's family tree the only thing I can see that was a significant orange producer was the 1495 Stelts which was 4 generations back and is only responsible for 1/16th of the genetics in the 1501. Its pretty amazing to me how all of these recessive genes just somehow clicked together and came to the front in this one Pumpkin and somehow became dominant in the majority of its progeny as well.

If you go back there are some of the top producers that could throw very orange. 1161 Rodinis,904 Stelts, 1231 Pukos, 1370 Rose and the 998.6 Pukos. I think the 2009 was involved in some very orange pumpkins also. If you look behind the 1059 Vincent/McGill you will find the 998.6 Pukos, 904 Stelts, 1370 Rose. It seems as though the back genetics are coming through.

I agree with spudder. One thing I have to add is that the 1501 is mostly 2145 and, while it wasn’t orange, it threw some nice orange pumpkins and produced some fantastic orange seeds. My personal opinion is that the orange traits of the 1495 Stelts from the father came through with some fruit. The maternal side also has some older big orange producers such as the 1161 and 2009. It seems like the 1501 just won the genetic lottery and was able to put together some fantastic orange traits that didn’t always express themselves at first.
Also something to note is that the 2350 almost always throws the glossy orange and it is a selfed 1501, while the 1501 usually throws orange but has made some pinks, creams, etc. so it appears that Travis’s self isolated some of those orange genes and made them more prominent as one of the best HD producers of all time. The 1885 appears to follow a similar pattern but does result in white pumpkins somewhat frequently. My guess is the white trait comes from the 2112 Skinner side, which is a selfed 1810 Werner(a great big orange producer), which grew some white pumpkins like the 2072 Skinner.

Genetics can sure throw you a curve ball. in 2020 I grew a 571 Grubbs. I thought that this was about as sure of a bet as I could get to grow orange. the 571 was a glossy orange HD winner that was a selfed 1734.5 Clementz. The 1734.3 was a selfed 1317 Clemetz. I figured that the 2 generations of selfing would have loccked those genetics in but I ended up getting a white pumpkin.
