I'm gonna guess that it works the same for all plants - even if it means kinking a few 'leaves' the lighting should be just above the foliage, in any event. Light dissipates at some exponential rate per the distance away, just like a magnet to a metal surface. Maybe look into it, along with your watermelon plant and all others---eric g

My lamps have 30° lenses. This helps to achieve minimal light scattering. Despite the fact that the lamps hang very high, at the level of the watermelon leaves 40,000 Lux
