Hello! What huge onion plants you already have! Please tell me, I wanted to know about air pots, are they better to use than regular pots? Are there any problems with them? And please tell me in what ratio do you have the soil, is it a coconut substrate? Are you adding anything else to this soil?

Airpots help to form a mass of roots due to air in the compost/better drainage. these are filled with a coconut substrate and at each watering a special liquid feed is added. They can be difficult to water if allowed to dry out but I am using 'potato airpots' which have solid holes in the top 200mm

Thank you so much for such a detailed answer. May I also ask you whether perlite should be added to the coconut substrate or not?

Been using this method for 5 or 6 years and have added perlite to some Airpots during this time but not found any benefit. General note - onions do not like being over wet or overfeeding, I use new substrate each year so as not to build up disease problems.

Thanks for the clarifications. I have a request for you, please tell me, where can I find out more information about growing giant onions? I am holding a giant vegetable competition in Russia and we are being helped by growers of giant vegetables from different countries on different vegetables, but there are few people with experience and knowledge on giant onions, and there are a lot of questions.
