Here's the problem. I can't seem to calculate the estimated weight with the formula. I took a pumpkin that just began to rot and performed the three measurements: circumference, over the top and perpendicular to over the top and added the numbers up. Then I actually weighed the pumpkin to find that I was 70lbs off on a 29.5lb pumpkin!!!

Here's the quiz for the prize: What is the estimated weight of a pumpkin with: 79" circumference, 59" over the top stem to flower, 54" over the top in the middle. I look forward to the first ballpark weight. Make sure you send your mailing address. Remember, the first response gets the prize. Thanks

Hi Gary -- How funny! We had the same problem estimating weight using the three measurements. The problem is that they left out of step in the process. Add up OTT side to side, OTT stem to blossom and circumference. Take that total and multiply it by 1.9. The part that is missing is that you then take that total and divide it by 3. Then you will come up with your weight. 79 + 59 + 54 = 192
192 x 1.9 = 364.8 364.8 divided by 3 = 121.6 pounds

Also, you could compare circumference to the Stellpflug chart, page 109 of Don Langevin's How to Grow World Class Pumpkins book - That would make it 125 pounds using the chart. We don't know about the other measurement that comes up to 159.3 lbs. Someone please correct us if we are wrong. Have fun!

What were the measurements for the 29.5 lb pumpkin, they certainly were not 79, 59, 54!

79 + 59 + 54 = 192 OTT

Using the formula we just published in the artcle by Bart Toftness... that comes to 152.1 lbs.

Remember, the OTT formula is geared towards larger pumpkins! Not 20 pounders...

Mark asked if anyone had a copy of Don Langvin's charts. I found them on the internet at www.giantpumpkin.com. The site contains excerpts from 'How to Grow World Class Pumpkins', click on "Estimating Weight" and you will get a nice diagram on how to measure the pumpkin AND the tables to convert inches to pounds. Have fun.

79" circ = 138 lbs.
192 total inches = 159lbs.
I know I`m late, these are right out of the book. I think that there is a 5 percent give or thke with these measurements.
